Description
We have never been to Australia (Someday hopefully) but I came across several recipes for
Aussie Meat Pies and I had to try them. While these beefy, savory and delicious Aussie Meat
Pies were made in the US by
Americans on the 4th of July we made them in the spirit of Australia and loved every bite.
Ingredients
1 package (2 crusts per package) Ready-Made Pie Crust
- (Short Crust)
1 package (2 pastries per package) frozen Puff Pastry
- (thawed, but keep chilled)
1-pound 85/15 Ground Beef
¾ cup Beef Broth / Veg Broth or water.
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
1 large Yellow Onion (diced)
2-3 tablespoons Cornstarch
2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
⅔ cup Ketchup
¼ cup BBQ Sauce
1 teaspoon vegemite
- or Better than Bouillon Beef Base (Optional)
Salt & Pepper to taste
1 Egg (beaten)
Instructions
Add the olive oil to a large sauté pan over medium heat, add the diced onions and sauté 4-5
minutes till onions have softened then add the ground beef and continue to sauté until beef
is browned (6-10 minutes). When beef is browned add 2 tablespoons cornstarch and the 3/4
cup beef broth and stir till well combined. Then add BBQ, ketchup, Worcestershire and
(Better then Bullion/vegemite if using) salt & pepper to taste and combine well. Reduce
heat source to low and simmer till the filling thickens (about 10 minutes) remove from heat
source and allow to cool while you prepare the pastry. Using an individual 4 1/2-inch pie pan
as a guide cut 4 pie crusts (Should get 2 pie crusts from 1 sheet of crust). Again, using a 4 1/2
pie pan as a guide cut the puff pastry tops (Should get 2 pie tops from 1 sheet of puff pastry).
Form pie crusts into pie pans and fill equal with the meat filling. Using a pastry brush, lightly
coat the outside edge or the pie crusts with the beaten egg and top with the puff pastry
tops, using your fingers or a fork press bottom pie crust and top puff pastry tops together.
Make a small slit in the center of the puff pastry to allow to steam to vent. Bruch the tops of
the pies with the remaining beaten egg. Place the 4 pies on a cookie sheet and bake in a pre-
heated 425-degree oven for 20-25 minutes or until tops are golden brown. Remove from oven
and allow to cool on pie pans for 10-15 minutes.
Serves
4 hand pies
Additional Instructions
This recipe will make enough filling to nicely fill 4, 4.5 mini pie pans. In the YouTube video, I
doubled the recipe and made 8 hand pies. You could also double the recipe and use a single 9
in pie plate.
